European Union Organizations and Funding
European Science Foundation
ESF aims at promoting quality science on the European level. The organization serves as a networking agency that brings together scientists and funding organizations. The priority is given to the cooperative projects, research networking programs, etc.
European Research Council
ERC is a pan-European organization that aims to support investigator-driven frontier research. If ESF is more cooperative project oriented, ERC offers different kinds of financial support for a wider range of projects, from individual to cooperative. Both national and foreign researchers are eligible as long as they are working in Europe.
The Seventh Framework Programme
FP7 is designed to support a wide range of participants: from universities, through public authorities to small enterprises and researchers in developing countries. This program is complementary to ERC, and also provides support for the programs based outside of EU.
The Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency
EACEA is responsible for the management of certain parts of the EU's programmes in the fields of education, culture and audiovisual such as Erasmus Mundus, Tempus, Erasmus, Lifelong Learning Programme, etc.
Euroscience - A European Organization for Promotion of Science and Technology
Euroscience Foundation has the promotion of European sciences and cultures as its goal. This goal is reached by granting awards, funding workshops and raising funds for international scientific cooperation.
HERA - Humanities in the European Research Area
HERA is a partnership between 21 Humanities Research Councils across Europe and the European Science Foundation (ESF), with the objective of firmly establishing the humanities in the European Research Area and in the European Commission Framework Programmes.

Leibniz Gemeinschaft - Leibniz Association
The Leibniz Association comprises 87 research institutions which address scientific issues of importance to society as a whole. They provide infrastructure for science and research and perform research-based services – liaison, consultation, transfer – for the public, policy makers, academia and business.
Max Planck Gesellschaft - Max Planck Society
The currently 80 Max Planck Institutes conduct basic research in the service of the general public in the natural sciences, life sciences, social sciences, and the humanities. Max Planck Institutes focus on research fields that are particularly innovative, or that are especially demanding in terms of funding or time requirements.
Alfried Krupp Stiftung
The foundation offers a special program, "Rückkehr deutscher Wissenschaftler aus dem Ausland", for returning German scientists.
Fritz Thyssen Stiftung
