Teaching Assistant:
Teaching assistant contracts are offered to support faculty members in their teaching (e.g. prepare and conduct lectures, seminars and presentations, assist with research, student exams and grading). Prerequisites are extensive knowledge of the subject matter and as a rule a Bachelor degree.
2) Compensation

3) Where do I find on-campus job offers?
On-Campus job offers are posted on
Campusnet. Please log in with your individual password. You receive your password once you arrive and register at Jacobs University. Please consider that employment opportunities, especially when you first arrive on campus, are limited.
4) Where do I find off-campus job offers?
The Campus Jobs Office does not arrange for employment outside of the University. However, job offers or internships by other companies are announced via the
Jacobs University Jobportal or can be viewed on the black board; next to the Student Service Center`s office.
Businesses also announce internships and student jobs on
Uni Bremen Praxisbörse or
Universität Bremen Career Centre. Both sites are available in German only.
5) When are you allowed to work?
Crucially important for work eligibility are your residence and work permit. For 1st year students, please consider that it can take a few weeks until you receive both. A work contract is only valid if signed by both the student and the Campus Jobs Office. Please do not under any circumstances start working before the residence permit has been issued as the work is illegal and you will not be covered by insurance.
6) General restrictions for work
Students with a valid residence permit are permitted to seek gainful employment for up to 90 days (full time) or 180 day (part time) per year (refer to visa in passport). There are no time restrictions for students employed as assistants by the University - you have an unlimited work permit for any job connected to your studies. This rule also applies to the EU-countries Bulgaria and Romania. Students from these countries will receive a specific document Freizügigkeitsbescheinigung issued for this purpose, which needs to be added to their passports.
Any job NOT connected to your studies (external job) is regulated by the 90/180 days rule.
7) Special work restrictions at Jacobs University
In order to provide as many students as possible with the opportunity to work, the number of work hours at Jacobs University allowed each month (maximum of two contracts per student) is limited to the following:
Semester: max. 50 hours/month for Student Assistants or 40 hours/month for Teaching Assistants
Semester break (1 June - 31 August) and intersession (1 January - 31 January): max. 160 hours/month for Student Assistants
Ph.D. students and students who have already graduated with a Master degree, i.e. completed the Master thesis and /or passed the exams, may not work more than 40 hours/month as a teaching assistant or 50 hours/month as a student assistant at Jacobs University throughout the year due to their different status in the social security system.
