Unmasking the World: Rituals and their Representations (to July 21)

The Jacobs University Mask Collection was established in early 2012 and will first be presented to a wider audience – with texts in English and German – in the context of the exhibition

on show in the Jacobs University Campus Centre (IRC Basement) from
08 June – 21 July 2012, daily from 13:00-18:00.
Admission is free.
 
This exhibition – organised by undergraduate students taking the University Study Course World Arts: Definitions, Issues, Challenges and Dr Uta Protz – explores the use of masks in rituals and their representations. Spanning time and space, special emphasis is being placed on the use of masks in spiritual contexts, to obtain protection, to express social status, and to entertain.

Largely illustrated by way of photographs, the exhibition also features five original masks (respectively from Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Nigeria, and Peru), purchased for and now on loan from the student-managed Jacobs University Mask Collection. Spanning time and space, special emphasis will be placed on the use of masks in spiritual contexts, to obtain protection, to express social status, and to entertain.
 
An activity program (guided tours, children events, film screenings, etc.), aimed at visitors of all ages and conducted in English/German, will accompany the exhibition. Further, a small illustrated catalogue – with photographs of the masks in the Jacobs University Mask Collection and pen drawings of all other masks on display – will be on sale.
The proceeds will be used to support further acquisitions for the Jacobs University Mask Collection.
